Some Disney fans say the villain's role in the new movie, 'Wish', is almost lacklustre in comparison with its contemporaries in previous times.

King Magnifico, who plays the role of a villain in 'Wish', has come under heavy criticism from some fans on TikTok and Reddit. This happened after the character's song surfaced on the internet prior to the release of the movie.

Like Ursula from "The Little Mermaid", King Magnifico engages in sorcery and is also incredibly conceited like Gaston from “Beauty and the Beast." Just as Maleficent from "Sleeping Beauty", his powers are portrayed as a fiendish shade of green.

However, some Disney fans are of the opinion that King Magnifico didn't quite act the part. The criticisms came ahead of the film's release on Wednesday.

Some Disney experts and fans claim that the criticisms may be due to nostalgia. The Walt Disney Animations Studios has produced many topnotch movies over the years, and fans who have lasted through the decades are more inclined towards the supposedly better Disney 'days.'

A co-author on a January study concerning how Disney heroes and villains have maintained value for more than seven decades and, a professor of communications at the University of Buffalo, Lindsay Hahn gave her opinion: “You grow up in this culture of, like, Hades and Ursula and Maleficent and those sorts of villains … and these new villains are introduced, they just don’t do it for you. They don’t have that same nostalgic quality that you’ve grown up with.”

'Wish' relates the story of Asha, a 17-year-old voiced by Ariana DeBose, who lives in the magical city of Rosas. King Magnifico, voiced by Chris Pine, who is the ruler, grants its citizens wishes once in a while. However, when she discovers that King Magnifico does not intend to grant a greater portion of the wishes, she embarks on a mission to gain their freedom. During her mission, she mistakenly calls on a magical star who assists her at this time.

The release of the new film “Wish” comes as a celebration of the studio’s 100th anniversary, which is why the movie includes nods from Disney classics. For instance, Peter Pan appears in one wish, and Asha has a friend who sneezes often, just like Snow White's Sneezy.
